Long term water storage
I recently bought some 30 Gal drums that I'm going to use for water storage. And I'm going to place bleach in each drum to disinfect them, but I had a question about the bleach. Even though the bleach is a very small amount (I think 2 Tablespoons will purify 30 Gallons) is it still safe to drink, or do you need to do anything to the water when you use it?
Just looking for any tid bits of advice that others have already learned about water storage, and disinfection. |

I would suggest a search first... maybe using bleach or calcium hypocloride. That much bleach isn't going to hurt anything, but will basically become ineffective over time. For drinking water, let the water sit out for a while in a an open container (the bleach smell will diminish)or filter it. |
Re: Long term water storage
I change my water out on New years day and the fourth of July (easy days to rember) I have a Britta filter pitcher deticated for making my storage water taste better I don't think Brittas really take any bad stuff out but they do make water taste better.

Yeah I outlined the process I use 18 to 24 months ago here.

Re: Long term water storage
I'd like to see that thread mayhem, but searches turn up so many potential false positives that it's tedious to sort through them. If you can locate it and post a link to it here, I'd appreciate it. Water is one of my preps that I need to improve upon.

Re: Long term water storage
i think with some things you can trust your nose.
if it smells when you open it, it may need to be discarded or distilled. if it doesn't smell, you drink a little. if that doesn't make you sick, you drink a little more. same approach i've used to train myself to eat earthworms. |
